The Rest Of The Story

Ratzlaff & Hopper

Meanwhile in Nashville, Ratzlaff and his song writing brother-in-law, Gary Hopper were playing singer / songwriter nights and open mic nights while plugging their songs on Music Row. Before Ratzlaff joined Sawdust Charley the two performed as a duo, using their middle names, Edward & Neal and before that they both played in a band called Boulder.

Members:

  • Jamey Ratzlaff – Vocals;  Acoustic / Electric guitar
  • Gary Hopper – Vocals;  Acoustic Guitar

They had been fairly prolific during the Sawdust Charley years, and had penned the following songs that Sawdust Charley performed:

  • A Truck Stop Is A Sad Cafe
  • Another Night In Santa Fe
  • Daredevil Lover
  • Diamonds On The Barroom Floor
  • Free Roaming Child
  • Hot Nights
  • It’s Been A Crazy Day
  • Last Call
  • Lay It On The Line
  • Molly
  • Moody Woman
  • Motel Time Again
  • Settle Down With You
  • Sorry
  • The Bar Nobody Goes To
  • Touch and Go
  • Truck Drivin’ Song
  • Virgil of the Silver Screen
  • Waitin’ For A Woman
  • You Can’t Be A Lover

During the first few years in Nashville, Hopper & Ratzlaff wrote the following 18 songs, some of which were pitched to publishing  and record companies.  Two songs,  “I Shot The Jukebox” and “The Bar Nobody Goes To” were published by Gene Kennedy and floated around Nashville for years.  Coincidentally,  Mark Chesnutt had a hit with a similarly  themed song called “Bubba Shot The Jukebox”. Hmmm…
