Moving To California
Sawdust Charley was lucky to have a large group of close friends (entourage?), some of whom made the move to California with them, and also helped scout out a landing site for when they got there. The advance team procured a cool little place right on the beach. Some of the band members took to the California lifestyle immediately, calling out whale sightings and babe sightings from the deck overlooking the beach and ocean.
One of the first things they did was check out the competition. "We heard there was a country-rock club in San Diego that would be a perfect place for us to play," says Ratzlaff, "but when we got there the band was playing 'Shake Your Booty.' DISCO! It was a dose of reality we weren't expecting, and we realized we might be facing an uphill battle to find gigs." The couples in the band quickly moved a few miles inland to Vista, CA, where they found reasonably priced housing and started working construction to survive while they looked for gigs. But the gigs were few and far between.
