In conversations with Bob Feldner, sound guy, he clarified how all the Sawdust Charley recordings were made. He said they were all made using a Tanberg 4-track reel-to-reel recorder. The mics were taken from the board into two stereo tracks, and the instruments were recorded with the other two tracks.
My reel-to-reel is just a two track, and so this raises a lot of question.
- Who mixed the original tapes down to two tracks?
- What equipment did they use?
- Where are the original 4-track recordings?
- What the heck happened to the Tanberg 4-track recorder?
Perhaps I should just ‘let it go’ and be thankful that we have the recordings that we do, but I would LOVE to see if we could make them even better!
If there’s anyone out there that could shed some light on this, I would be eternally grateful.
